Brock looked at the clock right over Forrester’s shoulder. He really didn’t want to discuss his suicide attempt. He wouldn’t be trying it again so what was the point?

“I can see your mind working, Brock. Wayne wants to make sure what you did never happens again. You’re all like his children and it hurts his heart when you are suffering.”

“It’s not going to happen again,” Brock said firmly.

“Isn’t that what you said at twelve?”

Brock’s head sprang up and he locked eyes with the doctor.

“How did you know that?”

“Your mother — your real mother — showed me. You were being bullied at school for being gay; your parents never paid you any mind even when you came home with a black eye. They didn’t show affection, never said they were proud of you and basically pretended you weren’t there unless they had company over. Then you were paraded around as their blond-haired golden boy.”

Brock wiped his eyes and looked away. “Well, thanks for reminding me.”

“This is what I’m talking about, Brock. This is why Wayne is concerned. The past is just that, the past. Deal with it, confront it and let it go. You are not the same kid you were then. There are people in the world who will never understand that being gay is not a choice. That’s their problem, not yours. You spend all your free time with children with cancer and kids at the outreach center. Whether you know it or not, they know you care and they appreciate it. Zack, Jordy, Lance, Travis — everyone you know cares about you, Brock. You have to know that.”

“I do now.” Brock faced the doctor. “Some habits die hard, Dr. Forrester.”

“Kick this one, Brock. You have Zack at your side and he’s going to need you. Do you understand that? He’s going to need you. You have a mother who loves you, friends, family and a life. Live it.”

“Trust me, you’re not the only one my mother has shown things to.” Brock shivered at the memory. “I won’t be doing it again. Ever.” Brock tilted his head regarding the doctor. “You really don’t pull any punches, do you?”

“How does that make you feel?” Dr. Forrester lifted an eyebrow with a smirk.

“Ass,” Brock laughed.

“Good to see you smile, Brock.” Forrester winked. “Your time is up. I expect to see you in two weeks.”

“What? Why?”

“Just because you understand the why doesn’t mean you have it all figured out. This will be an ongoing thing, Brock, until you realize what triggers you. You haven’t even begun to scratch the surface and I’m going to help you unbury it.”

Brock shook the doctor’s hand and found Zack in the hallway. His heart ached at seeing Zack asleep and snoring slightly. The guy was exhausted. Brock hadn’t made things any easier on him. He approached carefully, not wanting another repeat of his flight into the wall.

“Zack?” Brock whispered.

Zack’s eyes fluttered open and he smiled.

“Hey.” Zack stretched out his arms. “How was the appointment?”

“You really weren’t lying when you said he was straightforward.
